VI. Thirteen Reasons Why to raise awareness for mental health?
Hello folks👋, welcome to my new post. Thirteen Reasons Why deals with the subjects of suicide and mental health problems. That's why the question we're going to discuss today is:
Mental health problems and bullying, especially among teenagers, are important topics we must talk about in our society to prevent self-injury or suicide. Unfortunetly, it is sometimes difficult to spot the signs of mental health problems. Also, many people who are bullying other people don't know the effects of their behaviour. That is the reason why we have to raise awareness for these topics. What are good ways to do this? Are books like Thirteen Reasons Why a good way?
On the one hand the opponents argue although books like Thirteen Reasons Why can raise awareness, they can't help the invidiual readers with their (mental health-) problems. Books like Thirteen Reasons Why could lead to even worse problems because there is a risk certain scenes could remind people with mental health problems of their traumatic experiences. For example, the way Hannah talks about her suicide might lead people with the same or similar problems to conclude that suicide is a good solution.
On the other hand people's opinion is that books like Thirteen Reasons Why are a very good way to raise awareness for mental health and bullying. Firstly the books show possible consequences of bullying. They show that bullying can lead to terrible endings like suicide. Secondly such fictional works can help to better understand what is going on in a victim's head, why they might harm therselves. Books like that can also teach the reader e.g. the different suicide warning signs. That could help to spot people with mental health problems and to convince them to start a therapy or something like that. At last, books like Thirteen Reasons Why have good morals. For example that all our actions and our behaviour have consequences, so we should pay attention on these.
To sum up, the opponents are saying books like Thirteen Reasons Why can't help the victims directly. The proponents are saying books like Thirteen Reasons Why can help the victims by showing the other people signs of mental health problems, so they can help the victims. I'm on the side of the proponents because I think if the society knows how they have to behave if they meet a person with mental health problems, many victims can be helped.
That was my argumentation on this topic. I hope it was interesting. Now the sad part😯 That is my last post😢 So, a big "Good Bye" to all of you✌
