III.Characterisation of Clay Jensen

(A small remark first: In the book the outer appearence and personal data of Clay is not completely described, that's why I'll also use some information from the series to the book.)
Clay Jensen is a 16-year-old american boy attending the "Liberty High School". He lives in Crestmont located in California and works in a movie theater called "The Crestmont". He's a tall, good-looking (I know, that's objective) young-man with blue eyes and brown hair. He also has a rather square face. Clay is a very interesting character because in the book his character traits aren't really mentioned. You have to interpret a lot out of what he says, feels, does, ... (That's called an indirect characterisation). I would say Clay is a good-natured, honest, sensitive, sympathetic, considerate, but also a little shy person. Hannah Baker describes him as a hilarious, all-round good person with whom you can have a pleasant conversation. In the story Clay Jensen is one of thirteen persons who receive the tapes explaining the thirteen reasons why Hannah Baker commited suicide. Each person is connected to these reasons. Until the part of the tapes where Hannah tells the story with Clay, he don't know why he is on the tapes. He is afraid of having done terrible things to Hannah without knowing it and so is responsible for her death, among other things. Along the story you'll notice that Clay is very upset about Hannah's suicide because she was his crush. She also worked at "The Crestmont". One night at a party they kissed and Clay could have helped Hannah, but she couldn't let it happen and so she avoided him afterwards. Because Hannah ment so much to him, he hates some guys on the list. For example, Marcus Fooley. Clay is a very important person in the story because he's one of the only persons who has lightened up Hannah's life while she was already feeling really bad.
That was my characterisation of Clay Jensen. I hope you've enjoyed it. See you next time✌
